Learning from Failures: What Went Wrong?
Case 1: Silk Road (2013)
- Operator: Ross Ulbricht (“Dread Pirate Roberts”)
- Mistake: Posted on a clear web forum asking for PHP help using his real email address years before launching the site.
- Lesson: Never link your real identity to your alias. Even once. Ever.
Case 2: AlphaBay (2017)
- Operator: Alexandre Cazes
- Mistake:
- Used his personal email in early welcome emails.
- Stored unencrypted passwords on his laptop.
- Lived a lavish lifestyle (Lamborghinis, mansions) that didn’t match his “legal” income.
- Lesson: OpSec is a lifestyle, not a checkbox. Encrypt everything. Live below your means.
Case 3: Hansa Market (2017)
- Operator: Dutch Police (Honeypot)
- Twist: After AlphaBay was seized, users migrated to Hansa. Unknown to them, Dutch police had taken over Hansa weeks earlier and were logging everything.
- Lesson: Never trust a market just because it’s popular. Verify PGP signatures. Use 2FA.
Case 4: Welcome to Video (2019)
- Operator: Jong Woo Son
- Mistake: Hosted the server from his home IP address in South Korea.
- Lesson: Never host illegal content from your home. Use offshore VPS paid with XMR.

- The “One Mistake” Rule: It only takes ONE slip-up to unravel years of OpSec. Ross Ulbricht made his mistake in 2011. He was arrested in 2013.
- Parallel Construction: Law enforcement often hides how they found you. They might use NSA surveillance but claim they “followed the Bitcoin.”
